Summer Clerk Opportunities

Gleaves Swearingen maintains an active summer clerkship program for law students between their second and third years of law school. We accept applications for our summer clerkship program beginning in August, and typically hire our summer clerks by October.

Our summer clerkship program is designed to provide law students an opportunity to learn about practicing law and about our firm, and to refine their practice interests. Our summer clerkship program is also our primary method of recruiting associate attorneys.

We make every effort to provide our summer clerks with realistic experiences in the many areas of law in which we practice. When possible, we arrange for our law clerks to be admitted to practice under Oregon’s limited practice rule, and, with client permission, provide them with opportunities to appear in court or in arbitrations on behalf of clients.

Our goal is to provide each summer clerk with a positive and enjoyable experience with our firm. For each clerk, we appoint an associate mentor who is responsible for supervising the clerk’s legal work and ensuring that the clerk becomes acquainted with all of the attorneys in the firm.

We strive to involve our summer clerks in the social fabric of our firm and provide them with opportunities to enjoy the many benefits of living and working in Oregon while they are with us. In addition to informal social activities, we have a firm softball team, the Sosumis, and invite our clerks to attend our holiday party and join our firm teams as we participate in the Pole Pedal Paddle in Bend, Oregon each year.
